Supreme nappy - but takes a while to grow intoReview by Noga

Absorbency (if applicable)
I was eager to give the Thirsties pocket nappy a try, because I read a lot of positive reviews about it, and also it has some unique features that no other pocket which is available in the UK has, namely the hemp insert and the double gussets and the legs.

I'm raising a breastfed heavy wetter boy, which required nappy to be able to absorb extra fluid at the front while also contain poo explosions which are prone to find the leg and back gaps and make a mess. a two-part system is obviously the best to contain this situation (Bambinex stretch are superior to Bamboozles in my opinion), BUT they make change time more complicated for child-minders who are used to disposable, and they are also very bulky, which I noticed begin to bother my growing baby who wants to practice rolling without disruptions. So a trusted, all-purpose pocket (all-in-one's bulk up in the washer and takes longer to dry than separate pockets and inserts)is what I am after.

After this long introduction, the nappy:
From the first look and touch you can see this is a superior nappy - the PUL is soft, not plastic-y, but also firm. the binding at the legs and back is much better than in other pocket nappies which have seems at their ends (seems are tiny holes that leak!). I like that it is velcro fastened because you get a better fit around the belly than with snaps. The front of the nappy is much wider than other nappies - which means that its potential to grow is significant. However, while it will definitely go all the way to potty training, it is more difficult to fit on smaller babies. Mine is 20 weeks and 6.8 kg and the nappy still doesn't hug him as snugly as it needs to. So I would call it a size 2 nappy more than a OS. The hemp insert is fantastic because it is thin but super thirsty so you get absorbency without bulk. BUT you have to pre-wash it at least 6 times to get to good absorbency, I tried to cut corners, and paid the price...
The double gusset design of this nappy is really nice. I push the inner gusset inward after fitting the nappy and let the outer one hug the legs gently.

So, even though the first few weeks with this nappy were far from ideal, my patience (and repeated washing of the hemp insert) paid off. As this nappy becomes fully functional, you can see the difference from other pockets or even AIO's.

The cost, to me, is still an issue, although it is lower than some of the other premium options that are available to us - and it is definitely premium.

I hope you find this helpful! (Posted on 06/08/2017)
