Prefolds
Prefolds are popular with nappy laundry services. They consist of a rectangular piece of cotton, with a thicker central panel. The nappy is folded into thirds and laid inside the wrap, and the wrap then secures the whole thing around the baby, so the nappy has no fastenings of it's own.
You may have heard of Bambino Mio or Cotton Bottoms nappies - these are prefolds. We don't stock these brands here, however do read on for details of the nappies we have available.
Details of how to fold and use these nappies are supplied with each purchase, and you can also find them in the Nappy Know-How area above.

Prefolds are widely used in the States and, I'm told, in Ireland. This is a straightforward 100% cotton rectangle which you simply fold into 3, like a letter going into an envelope. It's held in place with a wrap, so no need for complicated or sharp fastenings! The prefold system is one of the cheapest washable nappy systems – and the
most straightforward, although it is possible to fold and pin prefolds, which
gives them better poo-catching ability. It is an ideal budget system –
extremely affordable, and
requiring very little work (so ideal for nurseries/childminders to use!).
The prefolds are of industrial quality and are really made to last. They
should not be dismissed for their other multi-purpose uses such as mop-up
cloths or wipes. The almost rectangular prefold is folded into three, a
flushable/washable liner is placed across the now rectangular pad, and it's all
held in place with a wrap. No need for pins! It gives a slim fit of neat
appearance. Because there is little or no fabric on the hips, this is one nappy that fits quite easily under most styles of trousers, even slimmer fitting ones. You should, however, be aware that while your baby is very tiny,
and his/her poo very runny, it is extremely easy for poo to get off the prefold and onto the wrap (though rare for it to escape the wrap, too). This might
mean you need more wraps than if you chose a nappy which fitted more snugly
round thigh and hip.
The Nappy is made up of three panels, the central panel (thicker than the
wings) has eight layers of cotton, the wings have four each. They wash well at
60
°
C. This is the system most commonly used by laundry services. The three different sizes come with colour coded edging to make it easier to differentiate between sizes. Handy if you have 2 different sized children in nappies, or if like me, you're simply bad at remembering to put away the ones that don't fit anymore! Weights: Small (0-3mths),
100g; Regular (3-12mths), 125g; Toddler (12mth+), 150g.

| I highly recommend prefold nappies. They are great, especially if you're on a tight budget.
Saying that, my daughter is 17 months old and now she's bigger, I've found that the prefolds occassionally leak( that might be because we now need the larger sized nappy!).
I've started using shaped Mother-Ease nappies occasionally, for nighttime and daytime naps. That seems to have reduced the leaky incidents. I recommend these too, if you have a bit more money to spend.

| Fantastic- bought on a very tight budget. I use with the Nature Babies adjustable wraps and fleece liners. Very easy to use no problems with leaks. One of my best baby buys!!!! |

| Not the biggest prefolds fan, but of the ones I've tried Junior Joy are up there near the top, very absorbent, wash and wear well with no bobbling and don't go too hard when dry like some others do. |

| These are my favourite nappies. They are cheap, incredibly easy to use (I use them with nature babies popper wraps and fleece liners). Also I find them a slimmer fit than shaped nappies (my 5 month old daughter can sit up more easily and trousers are easier to fit). I also don't find that they leak onto the wrap more often than the shaped nappies but even if they did they are so much cheaper that you can simply buy more wraps (nature babies popper wraps are bomb proof!) |
